Social Security disability benefits sometimes get a bad rap. However, these benefits are a lifeline for millions of disabled Americans. Many Americans suffer from a disability. In fact, one in five Americans lives with a disability and one in 10 has a severe disability, according to the U.S. Census.
Many of the individuals who receive SSDI benefits suffer from severe health conditions, including terminal illnesses. SSDI benefits help recipients afford their daily expenses and keep many of these people out of poverty.
On average, SSDI recipients receive $1,100 every month. While this may not seem like a lot of money, it helps disabled individuals pay for housing, clothing, food and even medical care. Since most SSDI recipients are unable to work, and those that do are only able to work part-time, this monthly benefit is a necessity that many could not live without.
While many people apply for these benefits, there are strict standards that need to be met before people can start receiving benefits. Government reports show that roughly 40 percent of disability applicants are approved to receive benefits, which shows just how difficult it can be to be awarded SSDI benefits.
Individuals with a disability that makes it difficult for them to work should consider applying for SSDI benefits, especially if they are struggling to make ends meet. While SSDI benefits may not seem like a lot, the monthly award can be very helpful and give families a sense of relief to not have to worry about how they will pay their bills every month.
