Thanksgiving, which for most people is a time of togetherness, turned out to be a tragic day for the families of an elderly couple who were involved in a fatal accident. A high speed chase on the Ohio Turnpike resulted in two fatalities as a man traveling at speeds of 125 mph rear-ended a minivan, killing the 77-year-old couple inside.
Two troopers originally spotted a car traveling at high speeds in Fremont. The driver, a 24-year-old man, was driving erratically, weaving in and out of holiday traffic. Police tried to stop him, but could not catch up to him. The driver covered 60 miles in about 20 minutes before causing the fatal car accident.
Holiday travelers who witnessed the speeding man couldn't fathom how fast he was going, especially in the traffic. Those who were going 80 mph felt like they were standing still as the man zoomed past them.
Then drivers saw traffic come to a stop, with the crashed vehicles engulfed in flames. The couple, who were both wearing seatbelts, were trapped inside the vehicle. The driver suffered injuries, but they were not serious in nature. He is now at Luca County Jail awaiting a court date to face charges of reckless driving and vehicular homicide.
It is unknown what caused the man to drive at such excessive speeds. The man may face imprisonment and perhaps license revocation, based on what the grand jury decides. He may also face a wrongful death lawsuit from the victims' families as well.
