Driving is a skill that requires one's full attention. A small error, such as drifting into another lane, can have deadly consequences for others. A fatal car accident recently occurred in Wayne Township, 45 minutes outside of Dayton, after a woman crossed over into the adjacent lane, killing three people.
The accident happened on the morning of Jan. 19 on State Route 518. An SUV was traveling on the highway when a 31-year-old woman traveling eastbound drove into the path of SUV. The two vehicles collided, killing three people inside the SUV, including a couple and an 11-year-old girl. There were six other children inside the SUV who were taken to area hospitals for treatment of injuries. Their conditions are unknown.
The driver of the other vehicle and her 9-month-old son were also hospitalized for injuries that do not appear to be life-threatening. The woman does not face any charges at this time, but police are continuing to investigate.
It is hopeful that the accident investigation will show that the woman was a negligent driver. Her action caused injuries to 11 people total, including herself. Three of them killed due to her negligence and most of the victims were young children. Because of this, the woman could face manslaughter or vehicular homicide charges, once the investigation has completed.
In addition to criminal charges, the woman could also face wrongful death lawsuits from the family members of the victims. These lawsuits can help the family recover compensation for damages such as funeral expenses and lost wages. Emotional damages may be available as well.
