Traffic signs exist to provide drivers with both information and instruction. Without this information and instruction, accidents would be far more common than they already are. Their purpose may be obvious, but many still choose to disregard the instruction or information that traffic signs provide. When a driver fails to drive at the speed limit indicated by a traffic sign, or refuses to stop at a stop sign, the results can be devastating.
According to police reports, a recent accident in Ohio was the result of one driver's failure to stop at a stop sign. On a Wednesday night, a 29-year-old man who was travelling in a westbound lane neglected to stop at a stop sign. As a result, he struck the side of a vehicle driven by a 61-year-old woman. The 29-year-old man, the 61-year-old woman and the woman's 69-year-old passenger were all transported to a nearby hospital. According to police, alcohol is suspected to have been a factor in the crash.
A driver may run a stop sign because of alcohol impairment, or they may simply disregard the sign's instruction outright. In both cases, it is likely that the driver would be found to be at fault if an accident occurs and would thus be liable for the resulting damages. When another driver is found to be liable in a car accident, victims can oftentimes seek monetary compensation by pursuing a negligence claim in court.
By building a strong case and aggressively pursuing a negligence claim, victims may be able to obtain a monetary award that can help them cover the costs associated with accident injuries and vehicle damages. It may not erase the trauma they have endured, but it can help alleviate some of the financial burden that has been forced onto them.
