Disabled Ohio veterans who risked their lives to protect and serve this country will see a new and improved process for applying for Social Security disability benefits. The new process applies to those who have either a disabling physical or mental condition. This is a timely decision, considering that May 26 was Memorial Day.
For many disabled veterans, the SSDI claims process just adds to the frustration that they are already experiencing. To make the process smoother, claims will be expedited if the application has a disability rating of 100 percent Permanent and Total from the Department of the Veterans Affairs. They will be handled as high priority and the veterans will find out quickly whether their claim has been approved or denied.
The Social Security Administration created this initiative because the agency feels it is important to honor those who served their country. Many military personnel are injured during combat and they need these benefits quickly. Far too often veterans fail to receive the medical help they need because they wait for many months - sometimes even years - to receive their benefits. Sadly, some even die while waiting for their benefits to be approved.
SSDI benefits can help disabled veterans pay medical bills, attend school or just pay for everyday expenses. However, the application and approval process is not easy. In fact, most - 53 percent - of applicants are denied benefits. Some just accept the denial even though there are ways to appeal and re-apply. By simply submitting a bit more medical information, a veteran can receive much needed payments in a timely manner.
