Semi trucks pose dangers on the roadways. Since they are so huge, in the event of an accident, the impact can cause serious injuries. This can be true even when the initial impact is not that great, such a simple rear-end collision. An Ohio commercial truck driver traveling on an interstate under construction slammed into two crew members recently. Both are still alive, but in serious condition.
According to witnesses, the 37-year-old truck driver was trying to get around traffic on I-70 in Greenfield, Indiana, when the accident occurred on the afternoon of May 29. The two construction workers were in the roadway removing reflectors when the truck suddenly plowed into them. There were no signs of skid marks or brake lights, suggesting that the man did not even attempt to slow down.
The two workers - ages 26 and 36 - were taken to local hospitals in serious condition. One of the men was airlifted. It is unknown if the truck driver was injured in the crash.
Even though statistics say that truck drivers tend to be safer than other motorists, this was apparently not the case in this instance. The truck driver's negligence may have caused the truck accident in this case and, if so, he will likely be held liable for damages. It is unknown why he didn't slow down, but speed - and just being in a hurry - could have been a factor. It appears as though some drivers of commercial trucks want to reach their destinations in the quickest way possible and don't care how they do it.
Once an investigation like this is complete, an inattentive truck driver could face criminal charges as well as personal injury lawsuits. If a driver's negligence seriously injures not just one but two people, the injured parties could sue him for damages. For construction workers, damages such as lost wages could be significant. Moreover, for anyone hit by a commercial truck, the medical expenses and pain and suffering could be tremendous.
