It helps to understand the proper protocol following a car accident. Ohio motorists need to know to avoid doing certain things, or they could find themselves in a legal battle or losing out on important compensation they need to cover the damages they suffered in the crash.
The most important thing to keep in mind after a car accident is to keep the evidence. Anything damaged in the crash - including the vehicle, clothing or personal belongings - should be kept. Although it may be tempting to toss out a torn T-shirt, for instance, it could ultimately help prove negligence.
You should also never admit guilt. You may feel saying "I'm sorry" is the polite thing to say after an accident, but these two words can be used against you. This simple apology can make you appear to be the negligent driver, so don't discuss fault with the other driver. Let the court decide.
Unless you are in an unsafe position - such as in the middle of the freeway - don't move your car. The police will want to see the position of the vehicle in order to accurately prepare the police report, so keep it where it is, if at all possible. If you do have to move your car, never leave the accident scene. You could be charged with hit and run.
A car accident can occur at any time, so don't be left unprepared. Even a seemingly minor mistake can cost a victim thousands of dollars in much-needed financial compensation - money that can be used to pay for medical bills, vehicle damage and lost wages.
