Most Ohio residents know quite a bit about the restrictions regarding drunk driving, but boating under the influence can be just as deadly. Just like there are laws on the roadways, there are also rules and regulations for lakes and other waterways to keep boaters and passengers safe. Boating while intoxicated can be a serious issue. Not only are there fines and penalties involved for those who fail to follow the rules, but there are also safety issues that can cause serious injury or even death in a fatal accident.
Because a boater is exposed to other elements - such as weather, glare, noise and the motion of the boat - being intoxicated can be more serious in a boat than in a car. These elements cause boater's fatigue, which can affect a person's abilities. This can cause a person to be more likely to harm himself or others. An intoxicated boater may be more willing to take risks and, as a result, engage in speeding and other reckless behavior that can put the lives of others at risk.
Prevent boating accidents with a few key tips. Everyone on a boat should wear a life vest at all times. Boating regulations vary from state to state, so be aware of them, especially when traveling. Also, there are more people on the water on holiday weekends, so be extra vigilant during these times. Law enforcement will likely be stepping up during these times as well.
Intoxication is a serious legal issue whether a person is on land or water. Excessive alcohol intake can lead to poor judgment, which can result in a fatal boating accident. If a person is killed due to another party's negligence, the family may be able to file a wrongful death lawsuit to attempt to recover compensation for damages.
