Most of our readers in the Dayton area probably know that driving a car can be more than just a useful form of transportation - it can be deadly. Many people are well aware of the fact that hundreds of thousands of car accidents occur throughout America every year, some of which involve catastrophic injuries and fatalities. But, car accidents aren't the only dangers to drivers and pedestrians - a collision with a train can be just as devastating.
A recent news report detailed the story of a man who is now a spokesperson for Operation Lifesaver. According to the report, this man lost his legs in an accident involving a train when he was walking through a rail yard. The accident happened at night when he slipped near some railroad tracks and a nearby train began to move. The man, however, was unable to move, and as a result the train ran over his legs, severing them.
As a spokesperson for Operation Lifesaver, the man now tries to educate others on the potential danger of railroad crossing and railroad tracks. In the recent article the man noted that he hopes his story is enough of a warning that people will avoid careless behavior near railroad tracks, which he hopes may prevent fatal accidents.
Many cases that involve injuries, deaths and trains could have a number of factors at play. In some cases, careless pedestrians may only have themselves to blame, much like the man in the recent news story seemed to be implying. However, in other cases negligence could lie with the train company or the rail yard. Each case is unique, and determining who was at fault in a deadly accident can be a complicated endeavor.
